Coaching vs. workshops

What’s the difference?

Coaching is a form of discussion-based professional support that is less activity-focused.  While workshops can be mandate-heavy and often have compliance demands embedded in the outcomes, your goals for coaching are more problem-oriented.  Consider this: sometimes you want to plop into your work bestie’s office and just VENT about some infuriating moment (likely anchored in the Monolingual Bias) and while your friend offers a good listening ear, they aren’t an expert scholar who understands the educational landscape and systems level tensions.

DATES ADDED!- COACHING COHORT -

This is a four-session coaching cycle, with each 45-minute session designed to strengthen your advocacy skills and mindset. We will begin by exploring the concept of "Disruption Stories" and identifying the deficit language ideologies that can unintentionally harm emergent bilingual/ELL students. As you gain insights from these frameworks, you will be guided to craft your own powerful "Disruption Story"—transforming your experiences into a tool for impactful advocacy.

Karla Santiago, Coordinator of Dual Language and ESL programs, Indianapolis Public Schools

The coaching I received from Dr. Ardell gave me so many practical tools for making a real difference in my district. I was especially inspired by her 'literacy diet' analogy, which illustrates how we can consider the balance of English and our students' home languages. I'm already planning to use this powerful image in my next professional development to get my colleagues thinking through an equity-lens.

Director of ML programming, for a Chicago-based educational non-profit

My mindset about advocacy has completely shifted. I used to think I had to be gentle, but I now realize that directness is non-negotiable. If we aren't more urgent in our work, the whole system will fail us. Now, I feel truly prepared to spot bias and take action.
